If you can find a place to park, Point After Pub & Grill is a pretty darn good place for a fish fry. Tonight Beth, Dennis, and I had their regular fish fry ($10.99 a meal), Annie had the kids fish fry ($5.99) and DiAnn had the shrimp tacos, hold the hot sauce ($9.99). Beth also added a side salad ($3.99).
I have a love/hate relationship with this joint – it’s nice and centrally located within Stevens Point, but it’s also surrounded by mostly houses, making parking difficult during peak times, and a real pain in the rear during the winter. Usually I end up dropping off the family at the front door and then parking a block or two away. They have a small gravel parking lot in the rear, but there’s never a spot, and I wouldn’t recommend the area even if there was if you care about not having your car banged in to.
Alright, parking isn’t a deal killer, especially if you’re trying to work up your appetite anyway. Let’s talk about the food!
Point After Pub & Grill allows you to mix & match your fish choices which is super fun! Their normal fish fry comes with the choices of a fried beer-battered, fried seasoned, and a baked Cajun. Beth, Dennis, and I all opted for two pieces of the seasoned and two pieces of the beer-battered. Annie had two pieces of the beer battered as well.
This evening, the seasoned was the winner, by all accounts. The beer-battered was a bit overly greasy and, while the fish itself tasted delicious, by the end of my meal the paper lining my basket was nearly transparent and falling apart. The seasoned, on the other hand, had a great crust with just enough crunch without turning it into a fish stick.
Rounding out the meal were french fries (baked potato is optional), rye bread, a pat of butter, tarter sauce, and coleslaw. All of the sides were good. Not great, but standard tavern-esq fish fry accessories. The bread, sauce, and coleslaw taste like they come from a food service, which is fine, because let’s be honest we came for the fish!
The extras that I love about Point After Pub & Grill? Large water glasses with real straws that you don’t have to ask for. Always excellent service by their waitstaff. Extra napkins and small paper plates at the tables for sharing food and cleaning up after a Food Chucker.
Insider tip: If eating before 4:30, call for a reservation, especially during Lent. If you enjoy less of the tavern scene, ask for the lower dining area where the noise is less. Try not to get seated near the doors when it’s cold outside, those tables and booths catch annoying drafts as people walk in and out.
Food quality: 3/5
Atmosphere: 4/5
Cost: $$
The final word from The General:
“Pretty good fish fry, just don’t get stuck in the corner like we did last time, it was too damn loud.”
Dennis
